WHAT IS AIR CONDITIONING?

Air-conditioning is a process used to create and maintain certain temperature, relative humidity and air purity conditions in indoor spaces. This process is typically applied to maintain a level of personal comfort in your home or work environment.

What type of

Air Conditioning System should I install?

We get that question all the time.

Here's a brief outline of the two main types of Air Conditioners.

Split System Air Conditioner.

Split system air conditioners are perfect if you wish to only condition one area or room of your home or office.

An alternative to the standard split systems is the multi-split system, which has multiple indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit.

This enables maximum temperature control, with each room controlled individually, it means running costs are kept low, as only the rooms requiring air conditioning are switched on.

Split systems consists of two parts;

  • indoor wall mounted unit
  • outdoor condensing unit

Split System Air Conditioners are available in “reverse cycle” & “cooling only”.

Ducted Air Conditioner.

Ducted Air Conditioning systems enable total climate control of your entire home & can be installed into a new build or an existing house.

Ducted air conditioning is visibly less obvious than the traditional split system, as you will only see a ceiling or floor grill in chosen areas of each room.

The indoor system can be located in the upper roof space of a house & can also be located underneath the house, enabling you to have floor grills.

The condensing unit is located on the outside of the house.

Ducted systems have the option to be zoned via smart control, maximising energy savings by only having the rooms that need to be conditioned, on.

These zones can be customised to suit your home, reaching your desired temperature faster giving you the perfect indoor climate.

What is an Air Conditioning System?

Air conditioning (Sometimes called Aircon or AC) is a system used to warm or cool the temperature in the interior of a room or space. This is done by removing the existing heat and moisture from the room. In basic terms, an air conditioning system controls the temperature, humidity and air quality in indoor spaces.

How can I reduce my air conditioning costs?

There are plenty of cost-effective ways to cool your home, as well as more permanent adjustments that create a more thermally comfortable home.

Here are some simple strategies to reduce costs of running your air conditioner:

  • Only cool a smaller space.
  • Close off the room you are cooling to trap the air.
  • Set the thermostat between 22-24°C in summer.
  • Draw the curtains against the hot summer sun.
  • Use fans to help circulate the air.

How much does it cost to run an air conditioner?

Like other appliances around your home, the cost of running an air conditioner can depend on how you use it. Also, the brand and model of the system can impact on the running costs.

For example, the cost of cooling could depend on:

  • The wattage and star rating of the air conditioner
  • Fan speed
  • Size of space being cooled
  • Temperature setting

You can expect the running costs to range from $0.25 per hour for a small unit cooling a small space, up to more than $3.00 per hour for a reverse-cycle unit which is ducted to cool your entire house. If you run the system on most days over summer, the cost can quickly add up.

Also, the overall cost of running your air conditioner over the entire year will depend on various things, including:

  • The temperature in your state (Summer in NSW is not as hot as in QLD)
  • The Brand and Model of the air conditioner.
  • Its energy rating.
  • How many hours it runs for during the day and/or night.
  • How effective is the insulation in your home.

Should I hire a Professional to clean my Air Conditioner?

YES, when your air conditioner needs more than regular maintenance, such as when it does not reduce the indoor temperature to a comfortable level you should hire a professional service technician.

At Coastline Air all our technicians are trained to find and fix any problems in your air conditioning system.

Our technician will:

  • Check for correct amount of refrigerant
  • Test for refrigerant leaks using a leak detector
  • Capture any refrigerant that must be evacuated from the system, instead of illegally releasing it to the atmosphere
  • Check for and seal duct leakage in central systems
  • Measure airflow through the evaporator coil
  • Verify the correct electric control sequence and make sure that the heating system and cooling system cannot operate simultaneously
  • Inspect electric terminals, clean and tighten connections, and apply a non-conductive coating if necessary
  • Oil motors and check belts for tightness and wear
  • Check the accuracy of the thermostat.
